Clinical Significance:
Calponin is a smooth muscle specific cytoskeletal protein useful in the identification of smooth muscle tumors and myoepithelium. Calponin is useful as a tool to demonstrate the presence of myoepithelium around suspicious cell nests and, as part of a panel, is helpful in distinguishing in situ vs. invasive lesions.
