t(9;22) BCR/ABL pin

FISH

t(9;22) BCR/ABL

Alternate Test Names:
t(9;22)(q34;q11.2) (BCR/ABL)
Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia Panel test
CML Panel test

Methodology: FISH

Clinical Significance:
This FISH assay detects the t(9;22), which results in the BCR-ABL fusion gene. The hallmark of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is the presence of the BCR-ABL fusion gene associated with the Philadelphia chromosome (Ph). All cases of CML have a t(9;22) or variant and detection of this genetic abnormality is important in the diagnosis of CML. The BCR/ABL fusion gene resulting from the t(9;22) is the target for the tyrosine kinase inhibitor drug imatinib.
